trainers at meeting in preparation for the November GC-MS workshop in NigeriaProfessor Anthony Gachanja from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya and Dr Imran Janmohamed from Anthias Consulting visited the University of Lagos on the 1st – 2nd August 2016 in preparation for The GC-MS workshop, scheduled to take place on the 21st – 25th November for the first time in Nigeria. Dr Imran Janmohamed will also be a facilitator and trainer for that workshop. The workshop has previously taken place in Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.

The workshops began over ten years ago when two friends, one in Kenya (Professor Anthony Gachanja) and one in the UK (Dr Steve Lancaster) got together to provide equipment and skills for analytical chemists in Africa. Now, with support from a new partnership between the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) and GlaxoSmithKline, what began as a small-scale, volunteer-led scheme in Kenya is being rolled-out across Ghana, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Read more about the initiative here: http://www.rsc.org/news-events/articles/2016/jun/pacn-gc-ms-training.

The GC-MS workshop is now part of GlaxoSmithKline’s new five-year partnership to enhance the capabilities of African scientists in modern analytical techniques. It aims to train more than 400 scientists over the period, as well as training local chemists to train others, leaving a self-sustaining programme and a lasting legacy.

This GC-MS training programme will up-skill and empower Africa and develop practical analytical techniques to solve local challenges and contribute to global scientific knowledge.
