Your Hands-on approach to learning pyrolysis
Module 7 of the Hands-on of Sample Preparation course.
Combine the practical theory of pyrolysis with laboratory-based exercises when attending this Hands-on training course approved by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) for purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Apply the knowledge learned in each module through practical exercises involving sample preparation, pyrolysis method development, temperature optimisation, instrument setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Gain experience of pyrolysis workflows, pyrolysis instrumentation, sample introduction systems, and analytical techniques used to characterise complex, non-volatile materials. This course provides a practical introduction to one of the most powerful techniques available for studying polymers, plastics, coatings, natural materials, biopolymers, forensic samples, and other macromolecular materials.
This Hands-on Pyrolysis course is designed for analysts, scientists, technicians, and laboratory professionals who would like to develop both a practical and theoretical understanding of pyrolysis techniques. The course combines pyrolysis theory, method optimisation, troubleshooting, and real-world applications with laboratory-based exercises that reinforce learning and build confidence in using pyrolysis in the laboratory.
Why should I join?
On completion of this Hands-on Pyrolysis training, you will have both a strong theoretical understanding and practical experience of developing, performing, optimising, and troubleshooting pyrolysis methods.
This Hands-on Pyrolysis course gives you:
- A clear understanding of the principles behind pyrolysis and thermal decomposition
- Practical experience of preparing and analysing samples using pyrolysis techniques
- How complex materials can be characterised through their pyrolysis products
- Insight into pyrolysis temperature selection and optimisation.
- Practical guidance on sample preparation, thermochemolysis, and method development
- Hands-on experience with different pyrolysis instrument configurations.
- Exposure to furnace, resistively heated filament, Curie-point, and other pyrolysis technologies
- Practical troubleshooting techniques for solving common pyrolysis problems
- Experience applying pyrolysis principles through laboratory exercises and case studies
This one day course is spent learning the theory behind the different pyrolysis techniques and then puts this knowledge into practice in the lab, creating pyrolysis methods, analysing samples and changing parameters to see the effects. This course will cover analytical pyrolysis, samples that can be analysed, types of pyrolysis, instrumentation & set up and troubleshooting.

What would I learn?
This course focuses on providing an in-depth understanding of pyrolysis combined with practical Hands-on experience. You will learn:
- The principles of pyrolysis and thermal decomposition
- How complex macromolecules are broken down into smaller, analytically useful fragments
- The differences between pyrolysis, thermal desorption, and headspace analysis
- The operation and capabilities of furnace, resistively heated filament, and Curie-point pyrolysers.
- How pyrolysis products are transferred, separated, and detected using GC and GC-MS
- The influence of pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, carrier gas, and sample size on analytical results
- The principles and applications of isothermal, sequential, fractionated, and pyrotomy approaches
- Practical approaches to sample preparation for solids, powders, polymers, and other materials
- The principles and applications of thermochemolysis and thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation
- Instrument setup, calibration, maintenance, and performance verification
What knowledge will I gain?
By the end of the course, you will:
- Understand the fundamental principles behind pyrolysis and thermal decomposition science
- Be able to explain how complex non-volatile materials are converted into smaller compounds suitable for chromatographic analysis
- Understand how pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, and sample composition influence analytical results
- Know how different pyrolyser designs affect performance and application suitability
- Be familiar with furnace, filament, Curie-point, and specialised pyrolysis technologies
- Understand the principles of thermochemolysis and its role in analysing oxygen-containing materials and biopolymers
- Gain confidence in designing and optimising pyrolysis methods for different sample types
- Be able to identify and troubleshoot common issues including leaks, contamination, carryover, filament damage, sample heterogeneity, poor reproducibility, and temperature calibration problems
- Understand best practices for sample preparation, calibration, maintenance, and method optimisation
