Royal Society of Chemistry approved training logo

This course has been approved by the Royal Society of Chemistry for purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The Practical Essentials of Sample Preparation course combines the 8 individual sample preparation modules covering Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Derivatisation, Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE), Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME), Headspace (HS), Purge-and-Trap (P&T), Thermal Desorption (TD) and Pyrolysis (Py).

These courses will teach you the theory for each sample preparation technique and the knowledge of how to create methods, analyse samples and the parameters that can be optimised for each technique.

Learning outcomes

  • You will learn about how to use eight independent sample preparation techniques for GC-MS and LC-MS in great detail
  • You will learn the fundamental theory of Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Derivatisation, Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE), Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME), Headspace (HS), Purge-and-Trap (P&T), Thermal Desorption (TD) and Pyrolysis (Py)
  • You will learn about the types of samples that can be analysed
  • You will learn about the various parameters that can be optimised for each technique to improve method robustness and sensitivity
  • You will learn about the individual steps and processes of each technique
  • You will learn the frequent maintenance and common troubleshooting problems for each technique
  • You will learn the tips and tricks of each technique
  • You will learn about the benefits of each technique for the analysis of your samples

Who is this course for?

If you have reasonable gas chromatography experience but want further hands-on training on a new sampling technique, then this is the course is for you. Delegates should have good knowledge of GC or GC-MS or LC or LC-MS or have attended the Practical Essentials of GC & GC-MS or the Hands-on GC & GC-MS courses or the Practical Essentials of LC & LC-MS or the Complete HPLC & LC-MS courses.

Feedback from previous attendees of Virtual Classroom course

"I thought it was well-structured and very easy to follow."  Joe Marsden, PhD Student, University of Leeds (Practical Essentials of Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), November 2021).

"It was a very good introduction to LLE."  Blaise Bridier, Customer application development technologist, ExxonMobil Chemical (Practical Essentials of Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), November 2021).

"The expertise and knowledge of the presenters. It is better [compared to other courses] because the presenters introduced a high sense of practicality."  Feedback from the Practical Essentials of Sample Preparation (modules 1 - 8), July/August 2021.

"Great presenter with lots of knowledge on pyrolysis and great scientific content delivery skills!"  Feedback from the Practical Essentials of Pyrolysis (Py), August 2021.

"I enjoyed that the course covered all aspects of TD knowledge required and that it was understandable for even a beginner like myself."  Practical Essentials of Thermal Desorption, April 2021.

Feedback from previous attendees of Face-to-Face course

"This course gave me a good overview of what goes into analyzing with thermal desorption alone and helped to formulate some ideas of how it can be implemented in our laboratory. This course moved at a steady pace, was perfect for a novice. There wasn't anything I was not able to understand and possibly use in the future."  Feedback from the Practical Essentials of Thermal Desorption Short Course at Pittcon 2019.

"Very thorough. Slides are excellent. Good pace."  Feedback from the Practical Essentials of Thermal Desorption Short Course at Pittcon 2019.
