Tech Tip 14: Use your GC or GC-MS instrument to its full capabilities

Would you believe that only a small percentage of GC and GC-MS instruments are used to their full capabilities? This is the same for the data analysis systems.

Improve your methodologies and make the most of what you have with optimised methods (both the analysis and the data processing) for high throughput and accurate analyses.

Ways to improve your methodologies:

  • Understand your system and what it is capable of - this could be back to basics and understanding the techniques and theory behind gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, or having manufacturer specific training on your instrument, both hardware and software.
  • Spend some time updating your method to match your needs, this could include upgrading your instruments to additional techniques and newer software functionalities.
  • Always consider the data analysis side of your method as well as the sample preparation and analysis itself, remember this can take an equal amount of time to optimise!
  • Consider investing in some training to enhance your knowledge and then make sure you set aside some time to use that knowledge!

Not only are you now improving your methods and saving time there, but increasing your knowledge of your system can also result in less downtime through troubleshooting and maintenance.
