Your hands-on approach to learning inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)

Combine both the practical theory of inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS) with hands-on exercises when attending this intermediate 2-day hands-on training course. This 50:50 classroom to laboratory-based training course will alternate learning the theory of ICP-MS with getting hands-on with an instrument, applying the knowledge learnt in each module to exercises involving the ICP-MS instrumentation.

This hands-on ICP-MS course is ideal for analysts, students and professionals who already have a basic understanding of ICP-MS but would like to gain more in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience. The course will cover the theory, method parameters, method development, basic sample preparation, plus maintenance and troubleshooting which will then be put into practice with lab-based hands-on exercises.

Why should I join Hands-on ICP-MS?

On completion, you will have in-depth theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical experience of using, maintaining and troubleshooting ICP-MS with the confidence to apply this as soon as you return to your lab.

This hands-on ICP-MS course gives you:

  • Strong theoretical and practical skills for using ICP-MS
  • Clear explanations and examples of ICP-MS instrumentation and components
  • A guide to sample preparation methods for ICP-MS
  • An in-depth look into interferences that occur in ICP-MS
  • A wide range and varied set of lab-based exercises for ICP-MS
  • An insight into the common maintenance tasks required for operating an ICP-MS as well as common problems that require troubleshooting
  • A great refresher for ICP-MS users who haven’t used the technique in a while

This is your opportunity to get hands-on with ICP-MS and expand your analytical repertoire.

What would I learn on Hands-on ICP-MS?

A user friendly ICP-MS course that covers the theory and fundamentals of ICP-MS, with matching lab-based exercises to put the knowledge learnt into practice, you will learn:

  • The principles behind ICP-MS and how the techniques hyphenate together
  • Reasons and uses of sample preparation techniques for ICP-MS
  • Functional components of the ICP-MS from the autosampler through to the inner workings of the mass spectrometer
  • The pros and cons of the various types of spray chambers and nebulisers available in ICP-MS
  • Learn the diverse types of ICP-MS that are available in the analytical chemistry world
  • Learn what regular maintenance should be performed on an ICP-MS
  • Learn how to troubleshoot common problems in ICP-MS

What knowledge will I gain on Hands-on ICP-MS?

  • Understand the fundamentals behind of ICP-MS, from the theory and chemistry behind ICP-MS, to the operational approach to the instrument
  • Be familiar with common sampling techniques associated with ICP-MS including acid and microwave digestion
  • Have an insight into more specialised techniques such as Time of Flight (ToFMS), magnetic sector for high resolution ICP-MS and triple quadrupole (QQQMS) tandem mass spectrometers used in ICP-MS/MS
  • Be confident in discussing the key sections of ICP-MS instrumentation from the autosampler through to the detector
  • Be adept at knowing how to check the ICP-MS hardware and how to tune and optimise an instrument
  • How to overcome interferences within ICP-MS using the collision reaction cell (CRC)
  • How to perform basic maintenance on various components of the ICP-MS such as the sampler and skimmer cones
  • How to troubleshoot common problems that can occur when running an ICP-MS for analysis, including plasma ignition and poor sensitivity
  • Comprehend the principles behind data generation and data analysis when using an ICP-MS

Is this course for me?

This training is designed for anyone who needs a solid theoretical and hands-on approach to ICP-MS, including:

  • Analysts & technicians requiring training or a clear and structured refresher of ICP-MS
  • Laboratory or line managers overseeing ICP-MS instruments
  • Data analysts and report writers who interpret results but don’t use the instruments
  • Service and consultant engineers who need both a theoretical and a hands-on reminder
  • Sales, marketing or commercial teams working with ICP-MS systems, consumables, data or laboratory services

If ICP-MS touches your work in any way, this well-planned course delivered by experts in the field equips you to understand the science behind these techniques.
