Your hands-on approach to learning inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)

Combine both the practical theory of inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) with hands-on exercises when attending this intermediate 2-day hands-on training. Apply the knowledge learnt during the course to exercises involving the ICP-OES in the laboratory, where you’ll get to see and handle all aspects of an ICP-OES instrument as well as consumables, including the spray chamber, nebuliser, peristaltic pump and quartz torch.

This Hands-on ICP-OES course is ideal for analysts, students and professionals who already have a basic understanding of ICP-OES but would like to gain more in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience. The course will cover the theory, method parameters, method development, basic sample preparation, plus maintenance and troubleshooting which will then be put into practice with lab-based hands-on exercises.

Why should I join?

On completion, you will have theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience of using, maintaining and troubleshooting an ICP-OES instrument, with the confidence to apply this as soon as you return to your lab, giving you:

  • Strong theoretical and practical skills for using ICP-OES
  • Clear explanations and examples of ICP-OES instrumentation and components
  • A guide to sample preparation methods for ICP-OES
  • An in-depth look into spectral interferences that occur in ICP-OES
  • A wide range and varied set of lab-based exercises for ICP-OES
  • An insight into the common maintenance tasks required for operating an ICP-OES as well as common problems that require troubleshooting
  • A great refresher for ICP-OES users who haven’t used the technique in a while

What would I learn?

A user friendly ICP-OES course that covers all aspects of ICP-OES, with matching lab-based exercises to put the knowledge learnt into practice, you will learn:

  • The chemical principles and theory behind ICP-OES
  • Reasons and uses of sample preparation techniques for ICP-OES
  • Functional components of the ICP-OES from the autosampler through to the inner workings of the detector
  • Pros and cons of the various types of nebulisers and spray chambers available
  • Learn the different types of ICP-OES that exist in the analytical chemistry world
  • What regular maintenance should be performed on an ICP-OES
  • Learn how to troubleshoot common problems in ICP-OES

What knowledge will I gain?

  • Understand the fundamentals of ICP-OES, from the theory and chemistry of optical emission to the operational approach to the instrument
  • Be familiar with common sampling techniques associated with ICP-OES including acid and microwave digestion
  • Have an insight into both sequential and continuous ICP-OES instrumentation
  • Learn how to optimise an ICP-OES and how to select the correct wavelengths
  • How to overcome various interferences within ICP-OES using tools in the software such as inter-element correction (IEC)
  • Perform basic maintenance on various components of the ICP-OES such as the nebuliser, torch and spray chamber
  • Troubleshoot common problems analysis including poor sensitivity and overlapping wavelengths
  • Comprehend the principles behind data generation and data analysis

Is this course for me?

This training is designed for anyone who needs a theoretical and hands-on approach to ICP-OES, including:

  • Analysts & technicians requiring training or a clear and structured refresher of ICP-OES
  • Laboratory or line managers overseeing ICP-OES instruments
  • Data analysts and report writers who interpret results but don’t use the instruments
  • Service and consultant engineers who need both a theoretical and a hands-on reminder
  • Sales, marketing or commercial teams working with ICP-OES systems, consumables, data or laboratory services

If ICP-OES touches your work in any way, this well-planned course delivered by experts in the field, equips you to understand the science behind this technique.
