On the weekend of 6-8th May the Royal Society of Chemistry held its 16th annual conference for Emerging Analytical Professionals entitled “Analytical Sciences – Divide and Conquer”. This is designed to be a forum in which early career professionals have an opportunity to learn about techniques outside of their own analytical speciality which might be translated into new strategies within their industries.
Anthias Consulting Ltd was invited to contribute to the sessions by presenting two of the six one-hour sessions on developments in GC and GC-MS under the Continuing Professional Development Section. Stuart Pattinson presented “Looking for the Needle in the Haystack with GC and GCMS”, exploring the options for selectivity and sensitivity provided by combining modern hardware and software advances to extract more and more information form chromatographic and spectroscopic data.
The application of hardware choices such as selective GC detectors, NICI, and multi-dimensional techniques along with software advances in library searching, deconvolution software and chemometric data mining can be combined to reveal previously hidden information contained in acquired data. Out of the 31 CPD attendees, 24 attended the two sessions presented by Anthias, as well as two of the programme co-presenters.
On the Saturday evening, a fancy-dress disco themed on famous figures from scientific history was held after dinner. This resulted in several hotel bedrooms being raided from the large number of “Roman” dignitaries attending in traditional toga outfits! Nevertheless, full marks must be given to the conference organisers who attended as Cleopatra and other Egyptian Pharaohs, in immaculate and detailed costumes and make-up, quite stealing the show.
