Inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry employs an ICP ion source to generate atomic ions of the sample under investigation. The ions once generated are passed through a skimmer, isobaric interference ions are often removed by means of a collision cell prior to mass spectrometry detection, mass analysers are often quadrupole or magnetic sector based. Useful for isotopic ratio measurements, more sensitive than ICP-OES used for ultra-trace elemental analysis. ICP-MS is highly sensitive and capable of multi-element trace analysis and ultra trace analysis, often at the parts-per-trillion level. Testing for trace elements can be performed on a range of materials from super alloys to high purity materials.
