Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) is analytical technique that is used to measure the concentration of free atoms (often metals) present in the gas phase. Light emissions characteristic of the element under investigation are passed through the sample, only free atoms of the element under investigation will be able to absorb light of the specific wavelength. This technique is highly specific and provides high sensitivities using flame or graphite furnace atomic sources.
