A temperature programmed vapouriser (PTV) or multi-mode inlet (MMI) enables greater flexibility for sample introduction onto the GC column. Hot or cold injection, large volume injection (LVI) and selective discrimination of sample injections can all be achieved by control of the inlet temperature, gas flows and split valve positions throughout the sample transfer process. Some PTV inlets also enable in-liner derivatisation, thermal desorption and pyrolysis. This technique enables the easy handling of thermally labile compounds.
