Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation (MALDI) is a mass spectrometry technique that uses a laser to create ions from sample. The sample must first be mixed with a matrix substance that will strongly absorb the laser radiation. Due to the pulsed nature of the laser source, it is usually combined with a time-of-flight (TOF) analyser, in order to separate ions of differing mass-to-charge ratio. MALDI-TOF is one of the most versatile mass spectrometry techniques and can be applied for the characterisation of almost any class of compounds.
