In November, trainer and consultant Dr Imran Janmohamed returned to the University of Lagos in Nigeria to deliver the latest GC-MS workshop in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Pan-Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) training programme.
The event was one year on from Imran's last visit to the university which is one of several designated PACN hubs set up to train scientists across Africa.
The delegates, from various states across Nigeria and a participant from neighbouring Togo, received five days of training in a workshop entitled 'GC-MS: A Hands-on Approach' covering the essential theory and interspersed with practicals in the lab to provide hands-on experience, along with exercises on Mass Spectral interpretation.
The workshop helps analysts to understand and get the most from their instruments by providing a complete overview; from sample preparation to data analysis to mass spectral interpretation. The delegates carried out practicals in instrument maintenance and method development.
The workshops are part of a five-year programme aimed at increasing African scientists' analytical skills and creating a self-sustaining knowledge base. Through the PACN programme, local trainers have been recruited to continue to deliver the course through regional universities in their home countries.
Imran said "I was delighted to visit Nigeria again to help deliver the training to the participants. It is an amazing opportunity to share my expertise to help scientists with their analyses to solve important local challenges and contribute to this programme which will leave a lasting legacy of self-sustaining sharing of skills and knowledge."
