Tech Tip 29: Analysis of Unknowns - How? - Libraries! Part II: FTIR

In FTIR – Hundreds of thousands of reference spectra are available via many suppliers but are often collated and offered on single websites. Full spectral searching, multiple regions searching, browsable libraries and batch searching for multiple samples are all widely available. FTIR, being more powerful instruments, offer better reproducibility compared to old IR's.

Using a library for two purposes : The fibre particle is matched to a protein, the interferent is matched to a silicone oil.

FTIR even has one advantage over GC-MS and that is its specificity for isomers !

m- and p-xylene, always reported as a single co-eluting peak in VOC GC-MS, are easily distinguishable in FTIR.

The readily available reference data is also easily downloadable.
